History of The Matthew 25 Center

The Matthew 25 Center is a non-profit Christian ministry located in Pender County serving the needs of inmate families.  Born from a vision and named after scripture, the dream was brought to life over a period of years by volunteers and donors across all denominations.  Young and old, skilled and willing, men and women, mission groups, and prayer warriors from several states completed the construction.  Local businesses, offering free or low-cost building supplies, were among many believing that the needs of these families represent a real and worthy mission.   Area foundations also supported the construction.

The 7,000 plus square foot center was completed late in 2002 with no debt obligations.  After a start-up period the center officially opened in May, 2004.  Support is provided by area churches, annual fundraising events, individuals, and most recently, a grant from the Cape Fear Memorial Foundation.

The center’s lodging facilities are open to families who travel great distances to visit their loved ones in prison.   The closest, Pender Correctional Institution, is located in Burgaw, but services are not limited to this area.   A number of other prisons and jails are located within a short driving distance of the Center.

In addition, The Matthew 25 Center’s administrative wing includes office space which other prison ministries can use.  The Matthew 25 Center serves as a local base of support for these ministries as they reach out to the prisons and jails in SE North Carolina.
